Big Data: Beyond the Big Hype

Abstract:

There seems to be a lot of confusion about Big Data. This is the result of the liberal use of terms such as data mining, data science, data engineering, and machine learning. I will try to bring some clarification to this, and to bring the focus back to the challenges in realizing the potential of Big Data.

 

Short Bio

Won Kim is currently a distinguished professor and Managing Director of Gachon University’s National Program of Excellence in Software in S. Korea. He received a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received a B.S. and M.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In 2017, he received a Medal (Order of Service) from the government of S. Korea for his contributions to computer science and Korea’s software industry. In 2018, he received a Distinguished Educator Alumni Award from the UIUC Computer Science Department.

He is best-known as one of the pioneers of object-oriented and object-relational database technologies. He also founded and served as Chair of ACM's SIGKDD data mining society, and as Editor-in-Chief of ACM's Transactions on Internet Technology journal. He also served as Chair of ACM's SIGMOD data management society, and as Editor-in-Chief of ACM's Transactions on Database Systems. He is an ACM Fellow.
